Design Brief, Specifications, and Limits
Team Design Brief: Design a replacement boardwalk for the Avon Beach that has features that prevent damage to the structures during large storms and hurricanes. Include public facilities that would be necessary for a summer day at the beach. Design a system that will provide an off the grid power source for the boardwalk’s electrical needs.
Individual Design Brief: Design and develop the support system, sub-deck, and wear deck that must function as an area of commune in the summertime for the Avon coastline that stretches from Washington Ave to Norwood Ave.
- Specifications
- Limits

- Withstand weathering and corroding from the salt water and air.
- Boardwalk materials are limited to…
- galvanized nails/screws
- wood
- concrete
- plastic composite
- non corrosive metals (ie galvanized steel or iron)
- Have ample area for traffic of beachgoers to comfortably travel about.
- Boardwalk structure is limited in that it must fit within Avon city limits.
- Allow for comfortable use for barefoot guests.
- Wear-deck construction is limited to the use of non splintering wood….
- Cedar
- Oak
- Ipe
- Plastic Composite
- Concrete
- Pavers stones
- Head of the screws/nails will be at least driven flush with top of the boards.
- Support weight of superstructures and human traffic at busiest times.
- Should be founded on driven piles that are sufficiently capped to provide a foundation for the project’s superstructures.
- Allow for additional sub walkway reinforcement in areas under the superstructures.
- Sub-deck is limited to perpendicular installation to the stringers/joists
- Wear-deck installation is limited to planks installed flush against each other
- Be able to withstand destruction due to natural causes.
- Boardwalk systems are limited to designs that prevent destruction in the event of a category 5 hurricane or similar storm. Designs should be able to withstand…
- Storm surges
- Flooding
- Winds in excess of 150 mph
Again, how do you know your system will withstand a category 5?
ReplyDeleteAlso, concerned that you limited yourself to a boardwalk in your designs. I am not sure of the justification.
